What Comes to Mind When you Hear New York?

New York in my opinion is one of the greatest cities in the world; one that incorporates a variety of cultures and beliefs. New York has been referred to a melting pot because of its diversity. Commonly known as the “Big Apple”, New York has always been one of the more popular cities. Research showed that New York got its nickname because of its popularity compared to other cities. With all of its rich history, this city means so much to so many people. New York is not just a home, for me it’s the greatest place on earth.
I have lived in New York my entire life. When I say New York, I mean Long Island. After my parents migrated here from the Philippines, my sisters and I were raised with the culture of my heritage and the culture of New York. As a kid, I saw all the main tourist attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, The World Trade Center, the Bronx Zoo, Coney Island and have eaten at the original Nathan’s Hotdogs and The Museum of Natural History. However, I never truly appreciated what New York had to offer until recently. The main tourist areas are great for people who are new to the city, but the best spots, are the places that the locals know.
For example Brooklyn is probably one of the most misconceived boroughs. Some may think that Brooklyn is nothing but a dangerous area filled with gangs and violence. That is not the case. Other than the famous Coney Island, Brooklyn also offers an area with a beautiful view and great food. DUMBO is known for its artsy environment. I have gone there only twice. The second time came this summer. Right under the Brooklyn bridge, this area is a great place to relax and enjoy the summer weather. Of course I couldn’t go there without stopping by the famous Jacques Torres ice cream parlor and chocolate store.
The last thing that comes time of is Queens and its association in Long Island. People that I have talked to believe that Queens is not part of Long Island. I beg to differ. although the environments between Nassau, Suffolk and Queens is very different they are all part of Long Island. Queens is simply no more than a 20-30 minute drive for most commuters. To say that Queens is not part of Long Island is still a heated debated among its inhabitants.
I can talk about New York so much because I enjoy every aspect of it. I’ve been to many places with countless more still unvisited. I am proud to be a New Yorker and I couldn’t imagine living any place else. The original question was “What comes to mind when you think of New York?” The answer is everything. It’s a place to live, party, eat and enjoy.
